Brothers Marc and Sven Buob, now 24 and 25, were already riding motocross bikes as young boys. They had also taken part in races.
Around 2018, the thought of trying their hand at sidecar racing together began to take shape – with Sven as driver and Marc as passenger. The idea didn't come as a complete surprise: their father had also enjoyed success in sidecar racing on motocross tracks. His sons witnessed this as children and grew up with it, so to speak. After their first few races in the sidecar, they had a good feel for the tracks and realized that they worked well together as a duo. They enjoyed it and so they took part in one or two races a year, more or less on the side.
In 2020, they put all their eggs in one basket. First, they bought a new sidecar with a frame from VMC in Belgium and an engine from Husqvarna (optimised by
Ppower). With this, they now consistently tackled all 14 races of the
Swiss Championship. They are now regularly among the leaders. In 2024, they finished third overall. Their goal is the championship title or at least another top-three finish. This year will be close: due to a technical problem, they had to sit out one race and dropped out of the top three. But maybe they can catch up in the last few races.
They have also competed in the German and the
World Championship. The World Championship is not that easy: first you have to qualify for the race, and only 30 of around 45 teams are admitted to the race. The Buobs have managed this every time they have competed so far. In future, they want to take home their first World Championship points.
The most important race of the year for the two of them is a small one, the
Motocross Schmiedrued-Walde, their home race. "Everyone knows us here, we have lots of friends, acquaintances and relatives. We want to show them what we are capable of," says Marc Buob, who works as a forest ranger at the Suhr-Buchs forestry operation and rarely rides his own motocross bike off-road anymore. This is in contrast to his brother Sven, who drives the sidecar and professionally drives a truck, sometimes even abroad.
Both brothers speak very highly of Midland. "We are very, very satisfied with Midland oil. And I think
MS14 Multi Spray is one of the best products out there,‘ says Marc Buob: ’I like to use it after washing, but also before racing in the rain or mud: I spray the plastic parts with MS14 before the start so that the dirt doesn't stick so easily – otherwise the sidecar gets heavier and heavier with the mud that clings to it.
Their father is usually there with them on the track. He is their coach, supervisor, mechanic and motivator all in one. He contributes his experience and helps wherever he can. During the season, the races are usually on Sundays, Monday is for tidying up, and during the week there is fitness training for strength and conditioning – and before you know it, the next race weekend is here. "It takes up a lot of our free time," says Marc. But it's worth it, it's fun and the two Buobs have big plans for the future.
