What is the difference between GL4 and GL5? - What does GL mean in oil?

Different transmissions or axles require different transmission oils. Therefore, the transmission oils are labeled with specifications from vehicle manufacturers and the American Petroleum Institute (API) so that the right oil can be found for the transmission or axles.
The GL standards are very well known in the transmission oils. GL stands for nothing other than "Gear Lubricant" and belong to the API transmission oil specifications. Today, there are the following API GL specifications:

API GL-4

API GL-4 lubricants are suitable for axles with helical gears that operate under moderate to heavy speed and load conditions or for axles with hypoid gears that run under moderate speed and load conditions. API GL-4 oils are also used in selected manual transmissions (without hypoid gears) and transaxle applications for which API MT-1 lubricants are not suitable.

API GL-5

API GL-5 lubricants are suitable for transmissions (especially hypoid transmissions) and for axles that are operated under various combinations of high-speed/impact loads and low-speed/high-torque conditions.
A GL-5 transmission oil is also required for limited-slip differential, but with additional LS additive (LS = Limited Slip). This can be added separately or you can take directly an oil that is specifically formulated and already includes LS additive. The following Midland oils already include LS additive and are therefore suitable for limited slip differentials:

In summary, lubricants with the API GL-4 specification are suitable for lubricating axles and non-synchronized transmissions. Lubricants with the API GL-5 specification are specifically suitable for hypoid transmissions and heavily loaded axles. However, there are also products that have both of these properties and thus meet API GL-4 and API GL-5.

With our standard search, you can find all Midland products that meet either GL-4 or GL-5 in just a few clicks.

More questions about Gear Lubricant

Regardless of whether it is for cars, trucks & buses, motorcycles & ATVs, marine, construction machines, industry, agriculture & forestry or classic cars - which transmission oil is the right one primarily depends on which transmission needs to be lubricated. Due to the variety of different transmissions, there are also various transmission oils.

Both engine oils and transmission oils are used in vehicles, but the requirements for these oils are completely different. The reason for this is the different areas of use and the conditions in these places.

The transmission oil has various requirements that it must meet. The most important ones are:

  • Lubricating metal parts that slide against each other
  • Cooling the transmission
  • Transmitting power from gears
  • Protecting against corrosion

Transmission oils need to be changed much less often than engine oils. The reason for this is that engine oil needs to transport not only friction residues, but also combustion residues. The transmission oil, on the other hand, is only contaminated by tiny metal chips due to friction and therefore lasts longer.
