When should the transmission oil be changed?

Transmission oils need to be changed much less often than engine oils. The reason for this is that engine oil needs to transport not only friction residues, but also combustion residues. The transmission oil, on the other hand, is only contaminated by tiny metal chips due to friction and therefore lasts longer.

Some vehicles have an interval indicated when the transmission oil should be changed. Many car manufacturers now also advertise a lifetime fill of transmission oils and therefore do not provide intervals. However, if nothing is indicated, it is still recommended to change the transmission oil after about 80,000-120,000 kilometers. This is the only way to ensure that the contamination of the transmission oil does not become too great, causing damage to the transmission.

Intervals also depend on driving style. If you frequently drive short distances, the transmission will be subject to much greater stress than if you regularly drive long distances. The load also depends on the driving style. A sporty driving style also puts much greater stress on the transmission, leading to increased contamination of the transmission oil. This is irrelevant whether you have a manual transmission or an automatic transmission.

When changing transmission oil - the following must be observed

For manual transmissions, the transmission oil is drained through the drain plug and then the fresh oil is refilled. For automatic transmissions, this is somewhat more difficult. As only a small part of the oil flows out through the drain plug, a complete oil change cannot be performed in this way. Some therefore swear by flushing the automatic transmission, which is equivalent to a complete cleaning of the transmission. However, as this flushing must be carried out with a constant high pressure, other damages may occur. Others consider it more sensible to change the transmission oil in a classical way in several steps.

More questions about Gear Lubricant

Regardless of whether it is for cars, trucks & buses, motorcycles & ATVs, marine, construction machines, industry, agriculture & forestry or classic cars - which transmission oil is the right one primarily depends on which transmission needs to be lubricated. Due to the variety of different transmissions, there are also various transmission oils.

Both engine oils and transmission oils are used in vehicles, but the requirements for these oils are completely different. The reason for this is the different areas of use and the conditions in these places.

Different transmissions or axles require different transmission oils. Therefore, the transmission oils are labeled with specifications from vehicle manufacturers and the American Petroleum Institute (API) so that the right oil can be found for the transmission or axles.

The transmission oil has various requirements that it must meet. The most important ones are:

  • Lubricating metal parts that slide against each other
  • Cooling the transmission
  • Transmitting power from gears
  • Protecting against corrosion
