Different transmissions or axles require different transmission oils. Therefore, the transmission oils are labeled with specifications from vehicle manufacturers and the American Petroleum Institute (API) so that the right oil can be found for the transmission or axles.
API GL-5
API GL-5 lubricants are suitable for transmissions (especially hypoid transmissions) and for axles that are operated under various combinations of high-speed/impact loads and low-speed/high-torque conditions.
A GL-5 transmission oil is also required for limited-slip differential, but with additional LS additive (LS = Limited Slip). This can be added separately or you can take directly an oil that is specifically formulated and already includes LS additive. The following Midland oils already include LS additive and are therefore suitable for limited slip differentials:
In summary, lubricants with the API GL-4 specification are suitable for lubricating axles as well as synchronized and non-synchronized transmissions. Lubricants with the API GL-5 specification are specifically suitable for hypoid transmissions and heavily loaded axles.
