What are the advantages of lubricating oils compared to greases?

When lubricating mechanical systems or machine parts, an appropriate lubricant should be used for the best possible result. Midland reveals in this article which lubricant is best recommended for which situation.

At a glance: Advantages and disadvantages of grease

Advantages of grease

  • Excellent heat dissipation
  • Grease are suitable for high-speed ranges
  • Grease regulate the operating temperature
  • Reduction of starting friction

Disadvantages of grease

  • Lengthy construction
  • Grease can be associated with oil loss
  • Suboptimal sealing against dirt and water
  • Grease result in an increased maintenance effort

At a glance: Advantages and disadvantages of lubricating oils

Advantages of lubricating oils

  • Easy sealing of the bearing site
  • Lubricating oils are suitable for a wide speed range
  • Lubricating oils have a low friction moment
  • Low maintenance effort

Disadvantages of lubricating oils

  • Lubricating oils generate intense friction and heat
  • Lubricating oils do not ensure removal of dirt
  • Suboptimal heat dissipation

Grease vs. lubricating oils - a comparison

Grease vs. lubricating oils: Adhesion

Due to their adhesion additives, lubricating fats remain adhered to the lubrication point over a wider speed range - both at low and high RPMs. With lubricating oils, it must be ensured manually in each case that the lubrication point is adequately supplied at low as well as high RPMs. In terms of adhesion, the use of lubricating fats is therefore more favorable.

Grease vs. lubricating oils: Maintenance effort

Compared to lubricating oils, lubricating fats can be used over a longer period of time - in some cases, a lifetime lubrication can even be referred to. The minimal maintenance effort can be related to the slight intake of wear particles.

Grease vs. lubricating oils: Sealing of the bearing site

In case of moisture or intensive dust load, it is worth to opt for lubricating fats as they effectively protect machine parts against contamination and wear. The use of lubricating oil for sealing the bearing site can contribute to unwanted water absorption and is therefore less recommended.

Grease vs. lubricating oils: Heat dissipation

Lubricating greases usually stick to the lubricating point and - in contrast to lubricating oils - do not circulate. This property of lubricating fats leads to suboptimal heat dissipation. Therefore, either lubricating oils or high-temperature lubricating fats should be used at temperatures above 150°C.

Every engine is different, which is why there are different types of engine oils. To ensure that the engine is always optimally lubricated, the oil changes should also be carried out according to the manufacturer's specifications. With the right oil and the right change intervals, the lifespan of an engine can thus be extended. However, with the large number of engine oils that are now available, it is not always easy to keep track. We can help you find the right engine oil.
