If a hydraulic oil foams, this can be prevented to a certain degree with an antifoam additive. However, it is important to note that more of this additive does not equate to better foaming behavior. Therefore, the unauthorized use of antifoam additives is rather discouraged and it is recommended to change the hydraulic oil completely.
This ensures that the hydraulic oil in the system is clean again and that its functionality is not affected by mixing with other components.
There are many reasons why foaming can occur in the hydraulic system. Often the reason is a change in the surface tension of the oil. Such a change can occur due to mixing of differently formulated oils, impurities or oil oxidation. However, the operating temperature and its effect on viscosity, as well as the type of air intake, can also be the reason for the formation of foam. Often, excessive use of additives also promotes the formation of foam.
