Which engine oils can be mixed together?

Generally, different engine oils that meet the prescribed specifications of the vehicle manufacturer can be mixed together. Thus, oils of different brands and different viscosities (e.g. 5W-30 and 10W-30) can be mixed without problems as long as both meet the prescribed specification. It does not matter whether it is a mineral, synthetic or fully synthetic engine oil.

However, it should be noted that there are also quality differences even with the same specifications. Engine oils that are not produced according to officially released recipes or with poor base oils, for example, experience a faster quality loss (change in viscosity index or shear stability). This only becomes noticeable over time. The quality of the base oil and the applied viscosity index improver, also known as VI improver, have an impact on the shear stability of an engine oil.

Reserve engine oil in the car

It's a good idea to always carry a spare liter of engine oil in your vehicle. This way, you are always on the safe side and have the right oil on hand if needed. Finding the correct oil for your vehicle at a gas station shop or supermarket can be quite difficult. On our website, you can find all Midland products in the categories :

Clean Motor Oil

Before filling the oil, make sure that the oil was in a closed container and protected from moisture and dirt. If you are unsure, we recommend checking a small sample in a transparent container to detect any dirt or water.

More questions about Engine Oil

Every engine is different, which is why there are different types of engine oils. To ensure that the engine is always optimally lubricated, the oil changes should also be carried out according to the manufacturer's specifications. With the right oil and the right change intervals, the lifespan of an engine can thus be extended. However, with the large number of engine oils that are now available, it is not always easy to keep track. We can help you find the right engine oil.

In order to use the right engine oil, it’s necessary to clarify which specification the vehicle or engine requires. This can usually be found in the vehicle manual.

The engine oil has various requirements that it must fulfill. The most important ones are:

  • Lubrication of sliding or rolling parts
  • Cooling the engine at places where the coolant cannot reach
  • Cleaning the engine
  • Sealing the ring gap between the piston and cylinder
  • Protecting the engine from corrosion, wear and deposits

The vehicle registration certificate does not show what oil is needed. However, the vehicle certificate can help find the right oil. Here is how the vehicle certificate can help find the right oil.
