What are the tasks of engine oil?

The engine oil has various requirements that it must fulfill. The most important ones are:

  • Lubrication of sliding or rolling parts
  • Cooling the engine at places where the coolant cannot reach
  • Cleaning the engine
  • Sealing the ring gap between the piston and cylinder
  • Protecting the engine from corrosion, wear and deposits

Lubrication

The most important task of engine oil is clearly lubrication. Without oil, metal would rub against metal in the engine, leading to engine damage in a very short time. Thanks to the engine oil, the metal parts glide over each other with a light lubricating film, preventing their direct contact.
It is also important to have the right SAE viscosity. This defines the flowability of the oil at different temperatures and thus the lubrication capability from cold start to high operation. The oil must be liquid enough at all temperatures of use and at the same time guarantee a lubricating film.

Cooling

Although the oil pump in most engines only builds up an oil pressure of around 1.5 to 5 bar, a pressure of up to 250 bar can still arise at the bearing location. This pressure leads to an enormous heat development. Thanks to the oil, this heat is constantly dissipated and thus the piston bearing, crankshaft, and valve operation are cooled. Without this function, the oil would become so hot within a short time that the metal parts would weld together. The oil therefore takes over the cooling function at that point where the radiator protection cannot reach.

Cleaning

On the one hand, engine oil has the task of cleaning engine parts from combustion residues. This is the so-called detergent property of the oil. It is also important that the existing dirt particles cannot settle and clump. This so-called dispersant property of the engine oil ensures that the dirt is held in suspension and transported to the filter. The substances in engine oil that bring these two properties are called detergents and dispersants.

Sealing

The oil must ensure the fine seal between the piston rings and the cylinder so that no pollutants enter the engine.

Protecting

The task of engine oil is to prevent corrosion. Corrosion is defined as the decomposition of a metal caused by oxidation. By adding corrosion inhibitors in engine oils, the oil forms a protective layer on metal parts against water, oxygen, and other corrosive substances, thus protecting the engine.

More questions about Engine Oil

Every engine is different, which is why there are different types of engine oils. To ensure that the engine is always optimally lubricated, the oil changes should also be carried out according to the manufacturer's specifications. With the right oil and the right change intervals, the lifespan of an engine can thus be extended. However, with the large number of engine oils that are now available, it is not always easy to keep track. We can help you find the right engine oil.

In order to use the right engine oil, it’s necessary to clarify which specification the vehicle or engine requires. This can usually be found in the vehicle manual.

Generally, different engine oils that meet the specified specifications of the vehicle manufacturer can be mixed together. Thus, oils of different brands and different viscosities (e.g. 5W-30 and 10W-30) can be mixed without problems as long as both meet the specified specification.

The vehicle registration certificate does not show what oil is needed. However, the vehicle certificate can help find the right oil. Here is how the vehicle certificate can help find the right oil.
