Can I Mix Different Heating Oils?

In principle, mixing different types of heating oil is possible, but only under certain conditions and with appropriate caution. It largely depends on which heating oils are to be mixed, in what ratio, and which heating technology is being used.

Mixing Conventional Heating Oil with Eco Heating Oil (Low-Sulfur)

This combination is the most common – especially in households that still have remaining stocks of conventional heating oil in their tank and are now switching to eco heating oil (low-sulfur).

This is generally permitted and usually technically unproblematic, provided that:

•    The heating system is suitable for low-sulfur heating oil (which is the case for most modern systems)
•    The tank is clean and does not contain excessive residues or condensation water
•    The two products are not significantly different in age or contaminated

Since June 1, 2023, only eco heating oil may be sold. To use up old stocks, a transitional period until 2028 has been granted, during which mixing is permitted – but only as part of this transition.

•    Whether your heating system (especially older models) can process low-sulfur heating oil without any issues
•    Whether a tank cleaning is advisable or necessary before mixing
